When God Orders the Day

I didn’t want to call this blog ‘Time Management’ for a very simple reason: the phrase sounds like finger-wagging, and who needs that? Not me.

Have you ever lost track of time? Of course you have—who hasn’t? It happens to me regularly. I’ll settle in to write, glance at the clock, and see 10 AM. Perfect. Plenty of time. Then I look up again and the sun is dimming, the house is quiet, and somehow it’s 5 PM.

Whether I’m working on a short, contained piece (like a blog post) or a sprawling, complicated project (like a novel), I can disappear into the work. It’s engaging, enjoyable, and time seems to travel at warp speed.

For years I believed I’d never have enough time to write a book. Eventually I learned the truth: it’s not the hours you work that matter most—it’s the hours you waste. What I label “research” can easily turn into scrolling for information I’ll never use. What I call “editing” can morph into playing with the thesaurus just because the words are pretty.

Scripture reminds us not to depend on our own strength, and not to make our plans and then ask God to bless them. The real secret to time management is simpler and far more freeing: ask God to order your day, and ask Him to help you accomplish what actually needs to be done.

Our time problem is two-fold.

  • Do we forget to ask for help at the beginning of the day?
  • And when we do ask, do we make space to listen?

When we practice both—asking and listening—time becomes more of a servant and less of a master. We stop berating ourselves at day’s end for not finishing x, y, and z. We complete God’s list rather than our own performance-driven assignments. And working with God feels entirely different from working for Him.

We discover that peace isn’t found in perfect schedules but in a willing heart. And in that posture—open, listening, responsive—time finally takes its rightful place.

And we end the day not drained, but grateful.
