Part 7 from Strengthen Yourself in the Lord. 

How many times has a Bible verse been spoken over you, or jumped out as you read it? It probably was a promise from God, spoken by Him directly to your heart!

Scripture says that the promises of God are yes (affirmation) and amen (agreement) to those who believe. I know, sometimes hearing a promise and receiving it can be hard. I’ve heard many promises in the past that I basically pushed away because I couldn’t conceive of them being for me.

Bill Johnson reminds us “Meditating on the promises of God will strengthen you.” This includes the ones you aren’t quite sure of yet; the ones you have no idea of how God will fulfill them.

Years ago, I was reading Jeremiah 29, starting with verse 11. So far, so good. God had a plan for my life. But verse 14 grabbed my attention: I will release you from your captivity. Captive? Me? Why? How?

But once the PTSD hit and I received the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder, I knew. My captivity was emotional and mental, very real and very deep. God knew how He would release me before I even knew about my issues. And He gave me a powerful promise to hang on to.

I’ve had many promises given to me by God, through scripture reading, hearing sermons and teachings, and spoken by others. Whether my heart sang with joy or struggled with doubt, if it was for me, somehow, I knew it.

Ask God to reveal the promises you may have forgotten, as well as the remembered ones. Write them down and keep them handy. Say them out loud. Declare them to be true.

Meditate on them until they become interwoven with your life. The truth in them will strengthen you against the dark times.
