Working with God, not Working for God

Categories: Faithfulness of God

I’ve heard this so many times: be working for God at all times. Work for the night is coming. Faith without works is dead.

For the child of God, these can be scriptural (and are!) but misinterpreted. God doesn’t need employees.

I spent most of my Christian life (fifty years or so) working for God rather than with God. Like so many of us, I thought if I worked hard enough, it would please Him. God would love me more, or at least appreciate me.

This mindset has a title: Works Righteousness. It means we act like we have to earn His love. In essence, it means Jesus died on the cross and rose again for nothing. We can do it ourselves. In fact, we have to! Some religions make no pretense about it; working is the only way to heaven according to their doctrine.

This is such an awful lie. Jesus did everything completely. We have no need to earn His love or admittance into heaven. We can work our fingers to the bone. We can teach others to do the same, but His love for us is not affected one way or the other.

When I wrote “My Personal Holocaust”, I wrote it with God. As I finished every chapter, I asked Him, “What comes next?” When I ran into roadblocks, I paused working and asked Him for help and guidance. And He gave it!

This attitude made a difficult project much easier. His love was palpably with me. And it was much more satisfying to work with Him instead of worrying about doing the job myself.

For more on this subject, I recommend you go to Allen Arnold’s website at www.withallen.com. Great teaching!
