Holy Reconstruction

Part six in the series from Bill Johnson’s “Strengthen Yourself in the Lord”
Have you ever been through a remodeling project? Most homeowners have had this experience, at least to some extent. I remember getting my kitchen and both bathrooms remodeled; it seemed to take forever! And each stage had its own set of issues.
For example, demolition was marked by noise and dust. I honestly was glad I had a job to escape the chaos of my home. Then I welcomed the post-demolition cleanup, knowing it was a prelude to the reconstruction phase.
And then came the long-awaited improvements to my home. New appliances, new floors, ceiling and walls freshly painted. Wow! If I ever sighed in relief, this was it.
Johnson likens our lives to God’s reconstruction projects. When we surrender our lives to Him, we sign a contract to have the work done. We are not doing much of the work ourselves; that job belongs to God and the mentors He gives us. Unfortunately, it also means that we are often unaware of the work He does behind the scenes. And in that ignorance, we can more easily misread His leading. We can pray in fear and confusion rather than in faith and peace.
To avoid praying amiss, we need to spend quality time asking God how He wants us to pray. We need to build ourselves up in our most holy faith, as Paul writes, so that we can grow into the mature people He created us to be.
Eventually, we will become the mansion designed by the Master to be His dwelling place. The uncomfortable phases will fade and we will consistently welcome His presence. And we will learn that, although having answers to prayer is wonderful, intimately hearing His voice is our true source of strength.
That strength will take us through the dry and dark seasons.
